Styling Mid-Length Hair – Textured Waves Look

Styling Mid Length Hair - Textured Waves

Lately I’ve been really coveting the textured wave look. Here is how I style my shoulder-length hair and the products I use. I have mid-length wavy(ish) hair of medium thickness (but lots of it). For a long time, I’d not really know what to do with it. It’d just sort of hang there with no particular style at all. Now I embrace my hair’s texture and work with it. I apply sea salt sprays to give a little grit, then straighten it slightly as I have a fringe and it goes all over the place if I do not, and then add some texture creme to mess it up a little. I like my hair to be slightly wavy, a bit messy but styled, if that makes sense. Usually I find it plays up to my hair’s natural texture and look.

Steps and Products Used To Style Mid-Length Hair and Create an Undone Beachy Wave Look (Bumble and bumble – and their dupes)

I generally use Bumble and bumble products but I have listed some more affordable options which I also use as well and are just as good. I have listed the Bumble and bumble products and their cheaper alternatives I use to get that undone textured beachy wave look. I’ve also linked to reviews if I have posted about them on my blog.

Here are the products I use to create that messy undone-but-polished textured wave look, how I use them and the order I use them in.

Hair Oil to Tame and Protect

Usually, I apply the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil after I’ve washed my hair and it’s still damp. I find applying oil to my hair helps keep it sleek and of course they add a little heat protection too, which is good as I like to tame my hair somewhat with hair straighteners. I have posted a review of the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil.

Sea Salt Spray for Beachy Waves and Grit

I also spritz a little bit of the Bumble and bumble Surf Spray onto damp hair. It adds a little texture and once I’ve rough dried my hair it helps enhance the waves and makes them look sort of beachy. I posted a review of the Bumble and bumble Surf Spray here for a more in-depth analysis.

There are a few budget alternatives to the Bumble and bumble Surf Spray. Neither are complete dupes, but they work just as well and offer slightly different things. If you require a bit more moisture, I recommend the John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Salt Spray. I posted a review of the John Frieda Sea Salt Spray on my blog too. It smells gorgeous, like coconuts and holidays and gives beachy waves but without making the hair gritty or drying it out. I’d definitely recommend it if you have drier hair and need a sea salt spray that is not drying and is even a bit moisturising. If you want something more similar to the Surf Spray and don’t need a sea salt spray with any moisturising qualities, try the Toni and Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray. I mentioned it on my Best Sea Salt Spray post.

After I’ve applied a sea salt spray I usually dry my hair and then rough straighten it. I still want waves and texture but I want it to be styled, and I find as I have wavy hair it can develop a bit of a kink sometimes if I don’t straighten it slightly.

Texture Creme for that Perfectly “Undone” Look

I usually like my hair to look a bit undone. I usually apply a small amount of the Bumble and bumble Texture Creme. It says to apply to wet hair but I actually find it more effective to apply to dry hair. This adds a matte texture to the hair which makes it easier to style when it’s newly washed. Read my Bumble and bumble Texture Creme review to find out more.

Budget alternative to the Bumble and bumble Texture Creme – OUAI Haircare Matte Pomade (still a little on the pricey side, but not as much).

Hairspray for Finesse and Volume

I ususally finish off with a little hairspray to keep everything in place and add a bit more volume. My favourite at the moment is the Bumble and bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish Hair Spray. It adds a little more volume and I find it holds a style well. Read my full review of the Bumble and bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish Hair Spray.
