Halloween is one of those times when it’s tempting to go all in on the nail art. Tiny pumpkins, ghosts, spiderwebs, and plenty of black and orange can look great. But if you prefer your nails to be a little more understated, there are plenty of ways to give a manicure a Halloween feel without making it look like you’ve decorated your entire hand for a party.
I tend to prefer nail designs that still feel wearable outside of the actual holiday, whether that means a dark autumnal colour, a subtle bit of nail art, or something a little more unexpected.

You can’t really do Halloween nails without mentioning ghosts, but they don’t have to be particularly cartoonish. A sheer or milky pink base with tiny white ghosts is a much more understated way to wear the trend. Keep the ghosts small and simple, perhaps just adding two little black eyes, rather than covering every nail in them. I particularly like this idea if you want something that feels Halloween-inspired rather than obviously Halloween-themed.

Spiderwebs can very quickly become a bit much, but I love the idea of using them as a detail rather than the entire manicure. Try a sheer nude base with fine black spiderwebs concentrated around the tips or corners of a couple of nails. You could even combine them with a black French manicure on the remaining nails. The thinner and more delicate the lines, the more sophisticated the finished look.
3. Tiny Pumpkin Accent Nails
If you actually want your nails to look like Halloween nails, there’s nothing wrong with embracing the pumpkin. I’d just keep it restrained. Instead of painting pumpkins on every nail, use a neutral base and add one or two tiny pumpkins as accent nails. You could pair them with plain orange, brown, or black nails. A deep blood-red shade is an easy option if you want something dramatic without committing to ghosts, pumpkins, or spiders. Think darker than a classic red—shades with a burgundy, wine, or oxblood quality work particularly well in autumn. And unlike some novelty Halloween designs, this is something you can happily wear throughout October.
6. Oxblood Ombre Nails
For something a little more dramatic, try blending a deep burgundy or oxblood shade into black. The result has a slightly gothic feel, but the colours are still very wearable for autumn. I think this works particularly well on longer nails, where you have enough space for the colours to blend gradually. A glossy finish keeps it looking polished rather than costume-like.

It’s probably one of the more grown-up options on this list, and one I’d be particularly tempted to try myself.

Try tortoiseshell on a couple of nails alongside black, dark brown, or burgundy, then add a tiny Halloween detail to one accent nail – perhaps a little spiderweb, ghost, or crescent moon. I like this approach because the manicure doesn’t suddenly become irrelevant once Halloween is over. The tortoiseshell and autumnal colours can carry you well into November. I personally think this is such a gorgeous look and perhaps a bit more versatile than others on this list.
Which Halloween Nail Design Would I Choose?
If I’m being honest, I’m much more drawn to Halloween nails that don’t scream Halloween. I like a black French tip, or the tortoiseshell in particular because they still feel like something I’d want to wear for the rest of autumn.
But if you’re going to do Halloween nail art, I think a few tiny ghosts or a delicate spiderweb can be really cute too. The trick is simply not feeling like you have to put a Halloween motif on every single nail – I know the less artistic among us are breathing a sigh of relief here.
