Some fragrances just feel easier to wear once summer starts to fade. When the mornings have a bit of a bite to them and the nights draw in, I find myself reaching for fragrances with a bit more depth and cosiness. What could feel stifling in the warm summer sun now has more room to breathe.
During summer, when I wear a skin scent it tends to be light and fresh. Clean musks, airy woods and fragrances that sit close to the body rather than filling a room.
When September arrives, sometimes I still want that same understated, freshly-showered feeling – just with a little more warmth and texture.
That’s where these four fragrances come in. All four are skin scents in their own way, but each has something that makes it particularly appealing as summer fades. Whether that be a soft amber, a powdery musk, a salty warmth or a dry, woody edge.
They’re intimate rather than attention-grabbing. They’re the perfumes I reach for when I want to smell good for myself, rather than make an impression.
If you’re not quite ready to swap your skin scents for big autumn fragrances, these are four I’d recommend trying.
1. DedCool Xtra Milk
The creamy, effortless one

Since I’ve already written a full review of DedCool Xtra Milk, it probably won’t come as a surprise that it has made its way onto this list.
Xtra Milk is one of those fragrances that is difficult to describe without resorting to the slightly vague term “your skin but better”. It has that clean, musky quality that makes it incredibly easy to wear, with amber and bergamot adding a little warmth and brightness.
As summer fades, I really enjoy the understated yet warm and cosy feeling of this fragrance. It doesn’t suddenly become a heavy autumn fragrance; it simply feels a little softer and warmer against cooler skin.
There’s no big floral bouquet or sugary gourmand sweetness here. It’s clean, creamy and understated, making it a good choice for those days when you want to wear perfume but don’t want to feel particularly perfumed.
Why I’d wear it when summer ends: If you like the simplicity of a summer skin scent but want something that feels slightly warmer as you start reaching for knitwear again, Xtra Milk is an easy transition.

2. Room 1015 Sonic Flower
The clean skin scent with a little more personality

Buy Sonic Flower from Godshot Studio here
I think Room 1015’s Sonic Flower is an interesting option if you like the idea of a clean skin scent but don’t want something completely straightforward.
It opens with a bright, peppery quality before settling into a soft musk with powdery and slightly woody facets. I also get a faint pencil-shavings smell from it, which sounds strange but is actually part of what makes it interesting to me.
There’s a clean, almost airy quality to Sonic Flower, but it has more texture than some of the very simple “clean skin” fragrances I’ve tried. Sonic Flower doesn’t smell like laundry detergent or a conventional floral perfume either.
It also has moderate longevity on me – around six hours – which I appreciate in a skin scent. It remains fairly close to the skin, but doesn’t disappear almost immediately.
If you like Glossier You, I think Sonic Flower is worth trying. There’s a similar clean, musky idea running through both, but to my nose Sonic Flower feels a little more vegetal, elevated, and has better performance.
Why I’d wear it when summer ends: The combination of clean musk, pepper and that slightly woody quality gives it enough depth to feel interesting as the weather changes without losing the effortless quality I want from a skin scent.

3. Clean Reserve Skin
The soft and slightly salty one

Clean Reserve Skin is probably the closest of these four to what I think of when someone says “cosy skin scent”.
It’s built around a soft musk and warm skin accord, with a touch of salted praline giving it a subtle sweetness. Even though it has a praline note, it doesn’t smell like a conventional gourmand.
I find that saltiness particularly appealing. It gives the fragrance a slightly warm, almost mineral quality rather than making it smell like vanilla or caramel.
It’s also very easy to wear. This isn’t a perfume I’d choose when I want to make an entrance, but that’s rather the point.
For me, it’s the kind of fragrance that works particularly well on a grey afternoon when you’re wearing something comfortable and don’t want your perfume to compete with everything else going on.
Why I’d wear it when summer ends: It’s warm and comforting without becoming heavy, sweet or overly “autumnal”.
4. Matière Première Parisian Musc
The dry, woody skin scent

Buy Matiere Premiere’s Parisian Musc from AllBeauty here
Parisian Musc is the most sophisticated of the four, and probably the one I’d recommend if you like your skin scents with a little more structure.
The fragrance is built around ambrette seed, which gives it a soft, musky quality, alongside Virginia cedarwood and a subtle green fig-leaf note.
That cedarwood is what makes it particularly interesting to me. It keeps the fragrance dry and slightly woody rather than allowing it to become too creamy or powdery.
And that’s why I think it works so well as summer fades. It doesn’t rely on vanilla, amber or spice to make it feel appropriate for cooler weather. Instead, you get that clean, intimate muskiness alongside something slightly greener and more woody.
It’s polished without being formal and noticeable without being loud.
Why I’d wear it when summer ends: If you want a skin scent that feels a little more grown-up and sophisticated, Parisian Musc is a beautiful option.

You Don’t Have to Give Up Skin Scents When Summer Ends
I don’t think that as soon as September hits you have to bring out your heavy vanillas or amber perfumes.
I enjoy autumn fragrances, but I don’t necessarily want to smell like vanilla, cinnamon or caramel every day. Sometimes I still want to mix it up and wear something clean and understated – just with a little more warmth or texture than the fragrances I reach for in the height of summer.
That’s why I like these kinds of skin scents as the seasons change. They’re still intimate and easy to wear, but each has something that makes it work when summer starts to fade.
And honestly, sometimes the best fragrance is the one that only you know you’re wearing – it’s like a little secret you keep for yourself.
Do you change your fragrance wardrobe when summer ends, or do you wear your favourite skin scents all year round?
