When I think of tea fragrances, I don’t necessarily think of light, refreshing green tea scents. There is another side to tea perfumes that I find much more appealing once the weather starts to cool down: creamy sandalwood, spicy cardamom, smoky woods, fig, fruit and warm spices.
These are the tea fragrances that I reach for when I want something a little more comforting. And autumn always seems like the perfect time to bring out the tea scents with a little more depth.
Some are dark and woody, some are fruity and slightly smoky, while others are softer and creamier. They don’t all literally smell like a cup of tea, but they all have that cosy quality that makes them particularly good for autumn and colder days.
So if you’re looking for a fragrance to wear with a jumper, coat and the first proper chill in the air, here are eight tea fragrances worth trying.
1. BDK Gris Charnel

The vibe: Creamy, spicy and woody
Gris Charnel is probably one of the first fragrances I’d think of for a cosy tea perfume.
The black tea is woven together with cardamom, fig, sandalwood and a soft, creamy quality that makes the whole fragrance feel warm and enveloping. It isn’t a literal cup-of-tea fragrance. Instead, the tea gives the perfume a dry, slightly aromatic quality underneath the creamy woods and spice.
Cardamom is particularly noticeable to me, giving it a gentle spicy lift rather than making it feel heavy.
This is the kind of fragrance I associate with autumn afternoons, oversized jumpers and sitting somewhere warm while it’s cold outside.
It’s cosy without being sugary, which is one of the reasons I like it so much.
Best for: When you want a creamy, sophisticated autumn fragrance with a tea twist.
2. Le Labo Thé Noir 29

The vibe: Dark, dry and smoky
Thé Noir 29 is a much darker interpretation of tea.
The black tea is paired with fig, bay leaf, cedarwood, vetiver and musk, creating something that feels dry, woody and slightly smoky rather than sweet or comforting in an obvious way.
It’s one of those fragrances where the individual notes don’t necessarily tell you what the perfume is going to smell like. The fig gives it some softness, while the woods and tea make it feel darker and more atmospheric.
For me, Thé Noir 29 is a strong perfume that really cuts through the air. It’s definitely a cooler weather scent for me and I look forward to wearing it more this year. You can read my full review of Thé Noir 29 here.
It’s particularly good when you want something that feels warm without actually being a traditionally warm fragrance.
Best for: Cooler evenings, dark denim and people who prefer their tea fragrances dry rather than sweet.

3. Byredo Mixed Emotions
The vibe: Fruity, smoky and slightly strange
Mixed Emotions is probably the least conventional fragrance on this list. It definitely seems like a fragrance people have strong opinions on, but I personally love it.
It combines blackcurrant, maté and black tea with violet leaf, birch and papyrus, creating a fragrance that is fruity, smoky and slightly bitter.
The blackcurrant gives it a juicy quality, but it isn’t a straightforward fruity perfume. There is something darker underneath it, which is where the tea and woods come in.
I think this is a particularly interesting autumn fragrance because it doesn’t rely on the usual vanilla, amber or cinnamon combination to feel seasonal.
It has a slightly moody quality that works beautifully once the weather starts changing.
Best for: When you want an autumn fragrance that isn’t another sweet, spicy gourmand.

4. NEST New York Indigo

The vibe: Figgy, fruity and soft
NEST Indigo is a softer and fruitier take on the tea fragrance idea.
It combines tea with fig, lemon, bergamot and a mixture of floral and woody notes. The result is fresh enough to feel easy to wear but has enough fruitiness and depth to stop it becoming a straightforward summer citrus fragrance.
The fig is particularly appealing in autumn because it gives the fragrance a soft, slightly creamy fruitiness. If you like the idea of a tea fragrance but don’t necessarily want something dark and smoky, Indigo is a good middle ground. It’s a really approachable fragrance. You can read my full review of NEST Indigo here.
It’s the sort of fragrance that works particularly well on a bright autumn day when the temperature has dropped but the sun is still out.
Best for: Early autumn and anyone who likes their tea fragrances fruity and approachable.
5. Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly

The vibe: Bright, fruity and comforting
Dear Polly is one of my favourite examples of how a tea fragrance can feel cosy without becoming heavy.
The fragrance combines black tea with bergamot, apple and musk, giving it a bright, slightly fruity opening before settling into something softer and warmer. The apple gives it a crispness that works particularly well for autumn, while the tea keeps it from feeling like a conventional fruity perfume.
I also like that it has enough freshness to make it wearable during the day. It’s not one of those fragrances that you have to save for a cold evening. It does have a little smokiness running through it though, which I think makes it feel cosy.
For me, this is a lovely option if you want an autumn tea fragrance but still like your perfumes to have some airiness. You can read my full review of Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Dear Polly here.
Best for: Crisp autumn mornings, daytime and anyone who likes a little freshness with their cosy scents.

6. Memo Paris Winter Palace
The vibe: Warm, spicy and aromatic
Winter Palace takes tea in a much warmer direction.
It combines a tea accord with citrus, spices and woods, creating something that feels particularly appropriate once autumn starts edging towards winter.
The spices give it more warmth than some of the greener or fruitier tea fragrances on this list, while the tea keeps it from becoming simply a spicy winter perfume.
It’s the kind of fragrance that makes sense with a proper coat rather than a lightweight jacket.
And despite the name, I think it works beautifully in autumn too.
Best for: Cold days when you want something warming and aromatic.

7. Masque Milano Russian Tea
The vibe: Smoky, resinous and mysterious
Russian Tea takes the darker side of tea even further.
This is the one I’d choose if you want your tea fragrance to feel smoky and atmospheric rather than fresh and clean.
There’s a richness to it that makes it feel particularly suited to colder weather, with tea sitting alongside smoky, woody and resinous facets.
It’s less of an everyday “freshly showered” tea fragrance and more of a fragrance for when you want to create a mood.
Think dark evenings, wool coats and somewhere dimly lit rather than a bright summer morning.
Best for: Late autumn and winter evenings.

8. Kilian Princess
The Vibe: Sweet, soft and gourmand
Kilian Princess takes tea in a much sweeter direction. It combines green tea and ginger with marshmallow, creating a soft, creamy sweetness around the tea rather than the dry woods and spice found in some of the other fragrances here.
The ginger gives it a little lift, while the marshmallow makes the green tea feel fluffy and comforting. It’s quite different from the darker tea fragrances in this list, and is probably the one I’d pick if you like your autumn scents to have a gourmand quality without simply smelling of vanilla or caramel. Best For: Anyone who likes sweet, comforting fragrances and wants a more gourmand take on green tea.

What Makes a Tea Fragrance Feel Cosy?
One of the things I like about tea fragrances is that they don’t all create the same effect. Tea fragrances come in all sorts of varieties, and some don’t distinctly even smell like tea, but just give you that same sensory feeling.
Some use tea alongside creamy woods and spice, like Gris Charnel. Others make it darker with smoke and woods, like Thé Noir 29 and Russian Tea. Fruity notes can make tea feel softer and more approachable, as with Mixed Emotions, Indigo and Dear Polly.
And then there are fragrances such as Kilian Princess, which take tea in a much sweeter, more gourmand direction with marshmallow and ginger. It shows that a tea fragrance can be cosy without being dark or woody. Sometimes that comforting feeling comes from sweetness and creaminess instead.
For me, that’s what makes tea such an interesting note for autumn.
It can give a fragrance warmth and depth without automatically turning it into a traditional cold-weather perfume.
Which Tea Fragrance Should You Try?
If you like creamy and spicy fragrances, I’d start with Gris Charnel.
If you prefer something dark, dry and woody, Thé Noir 29 is a natural choice.
For something fruity and unusual, try Mixed Emotions.
If you prefer a softer, fruitier tea, NEST Indigo is worth sampling.
Dear Polly is a good option if you want something that still has some freshness and brightness.
For a warmer, spicier autumn fragrance, try Winter Palace.
If you want something smoky and atmospheric, Russian Tea is the darkest option here.
And if you prefer your fragrances sweet, soft and gourmand, Kilian Princess offers a completely different take on a tea fragrance.
Final Thoughts
I think tea fragrances work particularly well in autumn because they occupy an interesting space between fresh and warm.
They’re often lighter than the rich vanillas, ambers and gourmands that dominate cold-weather fragrance recommendations, but they can still have plenty of depth. Add cardamom, woods, fig, fruit or smoke and suddenly tea feels completely at home alongside knitwear and colder evenings.
And they don’t all have to smell like a cup of tea. Sometimes it’s just that dry, slightly bitter quality underneath a fragrance that makes it feel more interesting. For me, that’s exactly what makes tea such a good note to wear when summer is over.
