NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl review

The NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl is a recent addition to my NARS lip pencil collection. I’ve heard so many people rave about this colour saying that it was universally flattering and Taylor Swift herself is reported to wear it, so I simply had to check it out for myself.

NARS Dragon Girl is a pink-based red. I was actually surprised when I applied it with how pink it was. My other red NARS lip pencils were more scarlet red or deep red, so it was nice to have something different in my collection. Having said that, I don’t think this is a really unique shade, it’s just one that is a safe bet if you want to try a red that is going to flatter you.

As I said, it’s a cool toned raspberry red that comes in a jumbo pencil form. The pencil makes it easier to achieve a precise application, as I feel sometimes with lipsticks in bullet form I go over my lip outline and it can get a bit messy. That’s not ideal when applying red or other bright lipsticks, so the pencil form was a welcome change.

The only issue is, the pencil is an awkward size and as a result, only works with the NARS pencil sharpener. This is another cost and the NARS lip pencils are already £22 a pop, so it can all get quite expensive.

Although it’s a velvet matte lip pencil, application is not too drying. It doesn’t tug on the lips at all. Having said that, I always wear a lip balm underneath as I find wearing any matte lipsticks for hours can cause my lips to feel a bit uncomfortable after a while.

I always make sure to use a lip scrub beforehand too to make sure my lips are smooth before applying, as I find it tends to highlight any flakiness.

Once applied, the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl is a bright pink-red. I think it would complement so many skin tones, and outfits. Over time it fades evenly and to a more pinky colour. It’s not overly drying but as I said, it does not provide any moisture so I recommend using a lip balm before.

Have you ever tried the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl? What did you think of it?
