If you’ve been following my beauty ramblings here for a while, you’ll know that I like to keep things simple. Give me a multi-tasking skincare routine, an easy nail trend, and a low-maintenance lip product, and I am a happy woman.
Lately, that “keep it simple” philosophy has extended straight into my fragrance collection. It’s been so hot in London recently and I’ve been gravitating towards light, fresh fragrances. One perfume that instantly makes me feel put together is Diptyque’s Geranium Odorata.
Why I’m Obsessed
If you’re expecting a heavy, powdery floral, let me stop you right there. This is completely different.
When you first spritz it, it smells almost minty to start with. It’s incredibly bright, fresh, and has this lovely fizzy quality to it. You know that feeling when you eat a sour sweet and your mouth starts watering. That’s the sensation I get from the opening of this fragrance (although it’s not sour at all). It might be the slight hint of citrus I get from this fragrance. It has a slight lemon feel which might be from bergamot, and that plays with the cardamom to give it a zingy and zesty personality. As it settles down, it becomes a little warm and spicy.
That unique vibe comes down to a really interesting blend of notes: geranium, cardamom, tonka bean, and vetiver.
But here is the best part: it’s not a sweet, rich, or heavy kind of spice. The cardamom and vetiver give it just enough edge to add an extra dimension to the fragrance, lifting it so it doesn’t feel like a purely one-note floral. It gives it a crisp, authentic botanical edge that makes you feel instantly refreshed.
Interestingly, geranium is historically supposed to enhance a man’s skin, but I completely disagree with keeping it boxed in like that and I don’t think fragrance has a gender at all. In my book, this is perfectly unisex. It’s brilliant for absolutely anyone who wants a clean, green, sophisticated scent profile.
The Staying Power
Because this is an Eau de Toilette (EDT) concentration, it’s not going to be a massive powerhouse that walks into the room before you do.
On my skin, it lasts around 4 to 5 hours. It has a stronger, more noticeable projection for that first hour or so before settling into a softer, closer scent. But if you spray it directly onto your clothes, you can easily still detect it the next day. For a fresh daytime scent, it really holds its own.
The Vibe
I consider Geranium Odorata to be a daytime, casual fragrance.
It is definitely not a sexy, seductive, evening-out kind of perfume. Instead, it is exactly what you reach for when you want something fresh, invigorating, and clean. It is the ultimate scent for when you just want to smell effortlessly put together.
It has become my absolute go-to for:
- Wearing to the office for a polished, professional vibe that won’t overwhelm the room.
- Meeting up for casual weekend lunch dates.
- Spritzing on after a workout when I want to feel human again.
- Sitting in a cosy coffee shop while I get lost in a good book.
Geranium Odorata is completely unfussy and doesn’t scream for attention, but every time I wear it, I get that subtle waft of clean, green warmth. It’s casual, chic, and perfect for when you want to smell bloody brilliant without trying too hard.
It’s definitely more of a spring / summer scent to me because it’s so fresh and zesty, but I think the cardamom and vetiver give it enough depth to be worn year-round.
