Diptyque Do Son Eau De Toilette review

I bought Diptyque’s Do Son Eau De Toilette a few months ago now and here are my thoughts.

Recently I’ve been on such a perfume buying spree. I tend not to buy any for years and years and then buy a few bottles at a time when my tastes change. My latest buy is Diptyque’s Do Son – and the version I picked up is a limited edition 30ml version, which is now out of stock unfortunately. It comes in a lovely glass bottle with an illustration on the back which is visible through the glass. Diptyque describe the fragrance as:

Tuberose, Orange blossom, Jasmine, Marine accord
Tuberose lifted on a sea breeze, with notes of jasmine and orange blossom. The smell of summer on the shores of Halong Bay.
Do Son eau de toilette is based on a memory of Yves Coueslant, one of the Maison’s founders, who spent his summers in the coastal village of Do son. A recollection of a flower cooled by the sea breeze.

The perfume is very white floral, jasmine and tuberose heavy. I also get some salt which tempers the tuberose a bit. It reminds me a lot of Gucci Bloom, but more refined and less animalic. I think this is quite the white floral bomb, and definitely leans more feminine but of course anyone can wear whatever they like! For me it’s definitely a warmer weather fragrance I wear when I want to feel enveloped in a pretty, floral scent. But that’s not to say it’s a light fragrance – those white florals definitely pack a punch.

On me, this fragrance lasts hours and hours and has good sillage and projection. I’ve heard people say they find it nauseating and I can understand that as it is very strong but that leads me to my next point. Luckily for me, I go a bit nose blind to it at times and get a whiff of it throughout the day, when it comes back to say hello and remind me that it’s still there. I quite like that with this perfume, knowing it’s performing well but not overwhelmingly so. It lingers on clothing and the next day I can definitely still smell it on whatever I’ve worn before.

That does lead me to my next point about suitability in different environments though – it’s definitely a perfume you’d wear for drinks in a beer garden on a sunny summer evening rather than in a small office. I think it’s suitable for both day time and night time wear, you just have to be mindful on who you’re sharing close quarters with.

As usual, Do Son by Diptyque is on the more spendy side – coming in at £95 for 50ml of product. I think Gucci Bloom is a more affordable dupe, but there was a more animalic note in that which I did not like very much.
