In the early hours of Sunday morning, Columbia Road in Bethnal Green, London, comes fully into bloom. Market stalls are set up and you can pick up any type of plant or flower your heart desires.
The stalls are decorated with the flowers that each market trader is trying to sell. Each trying to entice potential buyers. You can usually get good quality flowers for a decent price at Columbia Road Flower Market, and there are so many different stalls, you can usually find flowers and plants you don’t normally come across in the city.
The market lines Columbia Road, and you can pass on the pavement on either side behind the market stall, or walk between the stalls. It gets really busy and the walkway between the stalls gets quite congested. I’d recommend going early to catch the best deals, as traders start packing up at about 2pm, and in the late morning / early afternoon it gets rather busy.
If you are after a drink, try Birdcage which is actually on Columbia Road itself. The Nelson’s is nice too. Laxeiro is a good Spanish place and my favourite cafe-come-food-joint is StringrayGlobe Cafe (although it gets very busy). Shoreditch and Brick Lane are close by too, and Brick Lane also has a market on a Sunday.
The nearest station to Columbia Road Flower Market is Hoxton station, on the London Overground. Alternatively you can get the Central line on the Underground to Bethnal Green.
Sunday only – 8am – 3pm.
