D.S. & Durga Debaser Review: A Summertime Fig Fragrance

D.S.& Durga Debaser

With notes of bergamot, pear, fig, coconut milk, iris, woods, tonka and moss, what I experience most strongly in D.S. & Durga Debaser is a soft, juicy fruitiness wrapped in creamy coconut and smooth woods. It does have a green quality to it, but it’s not overpowering or sour on my skin.

Rather than a sharp green or leafy fig scent, this feels like a blurred, sunlit interpretation of fruit – easy, wearable, and distinctly summer-ready.

Fragrance Notes in D.S. & Durga Debaser

According to Fragrantica, Debaser includes the following notes:

  • Top notes: Stems, greens, bergamot, pear
  • Heart notes: Fig, coconut milk, iris
  • Base notes: Precious woods, tonka bean, moss

On paper, this suggests a distinctly green, creamy fig composition with a woody base. In practice, it behaves a little differently on skin.

Opening: Fresh, but Not Overly Green

Despite the presence of “stems and greens,” I don’t experience a sharp vegetal opening. Instead, the opening feels airy and slightly bright thanks to bergamot, but it quickly softens into something more rounded.

The green facets are present, but subtle – more structural than dominant. If anything, they act as a backdrop rather than a leading impression.

The Pear Note: Subtle Juiciness Rather Than Fruit

One of the more interesting aspects of Debaser is the pear note. It is clearly listed, but it doesn’t come across as a crisp, realistic fruit.

Instead, it appears as:

  • watery rather than juicy in a literal sense
  • soft and diffused
  • blended into fig and coconut milk rather than standing alone

On my skin, this creates a gentle sense of “juiciness” that feels more atmospheric than fruity. It gives the fragrance lift without pushing it into sweetness or gourmand territory.

Heart: Fig and Coconut Milk in a Soft Summer Accord

Debaser D.S. & Durga

The heart is where Debaser becomes most distinctive. Fig and coconut milk combine to create a creamy, slightly milky texture that defines the fragrance.

Rather than smelling overtly green or lactonic in isolation, this phase feels like a smooth, sun-warmed fruit accord. The fig is not sharp or leafy here — it is softened, rounded, and almost abstract.

I also notice a light iris effect in the background, adding a subtle powdery transparency that prevents the fragrance from becoming too dense or tropical.

Dry Down: Soft Woods, Tonka and Moss

As Debaser dries down, it transitions into a gentle base of woods, tonka bean and moss. This stage is smooth and understated rather than dark or smoky.

The base reinforces the fragrance’s skin-like quality, keeping it soft and wearable rather than dramatically shifting the composition. It stays close to the body, with a quiet warmth that lingers.

Performance and Wearability

Debaser feels like a fragrance designed for ease rather than impact. It is not overpowering or heavily projecting, but instead sits comfortably within a personal scent space.

This makes it especially suited to casual daytime wear and warm weather. It doesn’t demand attention, but it feels polished and intentional. If you’re looking for some other summer perfume recommendations that feel fresh, click here.

I don’t think this leans particularly masculine or feminine.

I get around 5–6 hours of wear with moderate projection, which makes it a solid option if you’ve tried Diptyque Philosykos but found its performance a little underwhelming.

When to Wear D.S. & Durga Debaser

To me, this is a very specific kind of summer fragrance. It works best in relaxed, social settings such as:

  • meeting friends for coffee on a warm afternoon
  • pub gardens in the early evening
  • casual weekend outings
  • everyday wear when you want something fresh but not sharp

It feels too relaxed for formal or evening occasions, but perfect for informal summer environments where comfort matters more than structure.

Final Thoughts

What makes Debaser interesting is the difference between expectation and experience. The official note structure suggests a green fig fragrance with pronounced stems and greenery, but on my skin it leans more towards soft fruit, creamy coconut milk and diffused woods.

The result is less “green fig” and more “juicy summer haze” – a fragrance that prioritises softness, wearability and atmosphere over definition.

It’s easy to wear, easy to like, and especially lovely to wear in warm weather when you want something that feels effortless and interesting.
