I don’t know why but over the last year or so my hair has been getting so knotty after washing it. Maybe it’s a combination of things, and less frequent trips to the salon has definitely contributed.
I used to spend ages going through my hair with a paddle brush and it was hell. Sometimes I had knots around the nape of my neck that seemed impossible to tackle. So I’ve invested in two detangling brushes, the Denman Tangle Tamer Brush and The Ultimate Detangler Brush by Tangle Teezer. I’ve had them both for a fair few months now and thought I’d compare them.
Price
The Denman Tangle Tamer Brush costs £15 and The Ultimate Detangler Brush by Tangle Teezer costs £14 so there’s not a significant price difference. I know each brand has a few other models at different price points but I think these two are most comparable. In conclusion, based on price you should get the one you think works best for you.
Design

The Ultimate Detangler Brush by Tangle Teezer is the smaller of the two brushes, and slightly lighter. It features an ergonomic design with a handle that’s slightly curved upwards to help with grip. The brush has 325 patented two-tiered technology teeth to help with detangling and smoothing. The back of the brush is glossy plastic while the other side is slightly rubberised.
The Denman Tangle Tamer Brush is larger and has a rougher texture all over to help with grip. The bristles are also two-tiered and are set into a cushioned base. The bristles on the Denman Tangle Tamer Brush are nylon and feel slightly harder than the bristles on the Tangle Teezer.
Durability
I’ve had the Tangle Teezer for a bit longer but I’ve noticed the teeth have started to splay. I have quite thick hair and a lot of it, and seems that some of the teeth have given up trying to tackle the knots. The teeth on the Tangle Teezer seem a bit too flexible if that makes sense, or at least not able to return to the original shape. The nylon bristles of the Deman on the other hand have been harder and more durable. I know in the past the cushioned base of the Denman is prone to splitting though.
Denman Tangle Tamer vs The Ultimate Detangler Brush by Tangle Teezer – how effective are they actually?

So probably what you’re all wondering is how good actually are they at detangling?
I think both brushes are effective at gently detangling, but for me and my hair type the Denman edges it slightly. Its stronger bristles help to fully detangle, whereas the Tangle Teezer’s teeth sometimes feel too flexible and only tackle the first few layers of hair. Also I feel like with more use, the teeth are going to bend more and it’ll become less effective. There is a larger version of the Tangle Teezer which I’m interested in trying though.
Ultimately, they’re similar products and which one works for you will depend on your hair type. If you have fine hair you might find the Tangle Teezer works really well. If you have thick hair or it’s very dense, you might appreciate the stronger bristles of the Denman Tangle Tamer.
