10 things to do in london in summer

London always feels a little different once the weather improves.

Parks fill up, markets feel livelier, outdoor tables suddenly become competitive, and even the everyday walk to the station feels a bit more enjoyable.

While London has plenty to offer year-round, there are certain places that come into their own in summer.

These are some of my favourite spots to visit when the city is warm, bright and worth making the most of.

1. Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road Flower Market

One of the best Sunday plans in London once the weather improves.

Columbia Road is lined with flower stalls, independent shops and cafés, and the whole area feels especially lively in summer.

Even if you’re not buying anything, it’s a lovely place to wander.

You can read my full guide to Columbia Road Flower Market here.

2. Regent’s Canal Walk

A canal walk is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a sunny day in London.

You can start around Angel, Little Venice or Broadway Market depending on which part of London suits you best, then simply walk at your own pace.

It feels calmer than many main roads, and gives you a different view of the city.

If you’re in East London, it works especially well ending near Victoria Park, where you can stop for a picnic or a drink in one of the nearby pubs.

You can look at some of my snaps of Regent’s Canal and Victoria Park here.

3. Victoria Park

One of East London’s best summer spots.

There’s plenty of open space, a good atmosphere, and it works equally well whether you want to read, meet friends or just sit in the sun for an hour.

It’s also a very easy place to pair with Broadway Market or a canal walk.

4. South Bank

If you want a more energetic London summer atmosphere, South Bank is always a good option.

You’ve got river views, book stalls, food spots, street performers and plenty of places to stop along the way.

It’s one of those areas where you can arrive with no real plan and still have a good afternoon.

5. Tower Bridge Riverside at Sunset

Sun setting over Tower Bridge

If you want somewhere a little calmer, this is one of my favourite London summer spots.

Rather than staying in the busiest central areas, head to the quieter riverside spaces near Tower Bridge where you can sit by the Thames and watch the light change in a more peaceful setting.

It feels surprisingly relaxed considering how central it is, and is ideal if you want views without quite so many crowds.

You can read my guide to the best spots to watch sunset over Tower Bridge here.

There are also a few green spaces and pubs such as The Mayflower around for nice river views.

6. Kew Gardens

A classic summer choice for good reason.

Kew always feels like a bit of an escape from the city, especially once everything is in full bloom.

It’s ideal for slower days when you want greenery, space and somewhere genuinely pleasant to spend a few hours.

7. Vinegar Yard

If you’re meeting friends, Vinegar Yard is a very easy summer option.

Outdoor seating, food vendors, drinks and a central location near London Bridge make it one of those places that suits almost any casual plan.

It works particularly well on warm evenings.

You can read my guide to Vinegar Yard here.

8. Primrose Hill

For one of the best skyline views in London, Primrose Hill is hard to beat.

Summer evenings are especially nice here, when people gather with drinks or snacks and watch the city as the light starts to fade.

A good option if you want something simple but classic.

9. Bermondsey Beer Mile

If you want a more social summer plan, this is a fun one.

The Bermondsey Beer Mile has breweries, taprooms and plenty of places to stop along the route.

Even if craft beer isn’t especially your thing, the area itself has a lively summer atmosphere as many of the taprooms have seating areas at the front.

Just keep in mind that Saturday is probably the best day to visit where all taprooms will be open. As many are working breweries.

You can read my Bermondsey Beer Mile guide here.

10. Richmond Park

If central London feels a bit too busy in summer, Richmond Park is worth the trip.

It offers huge open spaces, walking routes and a more relaxed pace than many inner-city spots.

It’s ideal when you want a proper day out that still feels like London and Richmond in general is really picturesque and worth exploring.

Final thoughts

One of the best things about London in summer is that it doesn’t always need a big plan.

Often the nicest days are simply walking somewhere interesting, finding a good spot to sit, and making the most of the weather while it lasts.

Whether you prefer markets, riverside views, parks or somewhere for a drink outdoors, there are plenty of places that feel at their best at this time of year.
